West Virginia head coach Neal Brown left no room for speculation when asked if quarterback Garrett Greene would remain the starter when he is fully healthy.
Greene was injured during the first half in a loss to Kansas State this past weekend and did not play at all in the second half. Throwing the ball, he has recently had some struggles, including two interceptions in that first half, one of them a pick-six.
“Did you watch the last two drivs of the first half? It’s a non-starter. Alright next question,” Brown said when asked about Greene’s job security. “I mean he went 90 plus yards twice.”
The Mountaineers were down 17-3 in the first half, but somewhat rallied and had a chance to tie the game at 17, but failed. Although he did not finish the game, Greene still ended the game as WVU’s leading-rusher with 88 yards on the ground.
Brown also spoke of backup Nicco Marchiol’s performance against the Wildcats and explained how it was not his best showing. He mentioned how being unable to practice the full week may have affected his performance.
“He didn’t play well, didn’t play well. I don’t think it’s a fair assessment of where he’s at. Oklahoma State he played really well. And so, but he also had a great week of preparation that week and he practiced well and I wasn’t I wasn’t surprised. Last week missed practice on Tuesday and then wasn’t real sharp. So, he didn’t practice real well so and that’s kind of how he played,” Brown said of Marchiol.
On the season, Greene has thrown for 1,352 yards, completing just under 56% of his passes, with nine touchdowns and eight interceptions. On the ground he is West Virginia’s leading-rushed with 471 rushing yards to go along with three rushing touchdowns.
WVU will take on Arizona this week on the road. While Greene’s status is still up in the air for the matchup, it is clear that Brown still has full faith in his quarterback and he’ll start if he’s able to.
