West Virginia head coach Neal Brown addressed the comments he made earlier this week during his appearance on the Neal Brown Show, hosted by Tony Caridi at Kegler’s.
After the Mountaineers’ loss to undefeated Iowa State in the “Coal Rush” game, Brown drew national attention for remarks that many considered controversial.
Brown was asked why he believes fans should continue to support the team despite recent struggles, such as the fourth-quarter collapse in the Backyard Brawl and mistakes in the loss to Iowa State.
“I get that they want to win,” Brown said. “But what I would say is—did they have a good time? Did they enjoy it? It was a pretty good atmosphere. I’m assuming they had a pretty good time tailgating, so if they’re in it for enjoyment, then I would come back. I looked at the weather, and it’s going to be nice again.”
Brown later clarified his remarks.
“I hate losing. It’s not okay. I can’t stand it. I fully understand the expectations and scrutiny that come with this job,” Brown said.
He also believed some of his statements were misunderstood.
“Some of the stuff that’s taken out of context, that I don’t care about winning, is ridiculous,” he said. “We live in a soundbite culture, and I’ll learn from this.”
West Virginia will have a chance to bounce back this weekend when it faces No. 17 Kansas State in its second consecutive night game.
