The No.1-ranked West Virginia men’s soccer team lost their first game of the season, 5-1, to Dayton on Tuesday.
WVU was ranked as the No.1 team in the country in Tuesday’s poll ahead of their road game with Dayton.
The Mountaineers went down early in the game allowing a goal in the 16th minute by Joesph Melto Quiah.
WVU would go on to allow two more first-half goals in the 21st and 36th minutes of the game, extending Dayton’s lead to 3-0 going into halftime.
The Mountaineers were able to match Dayton in shots with six but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Right after halftime, Dayton scored another goal in the 50th minute on a penalty shot by Joesph Melto Quiah, his second of the night.
The Mountaineers scored in the 66th minute with a goal by Marcus Caldeira, his seventh of the season.
West Virginia would allow another goal in the 83rd minute, extending the Flyers’ lead to 5-1.
In the second half, WVU was only able to produce four shots to Dayton’s 10.
West Virginia’s record now falls to 8-1-3, 3-0-1 in the Sun Belt conference.
The Mountaineers will look to bounce back on Saturday, Oct.19, when they play a conference opponent in South Carolina at home at 1 p.m. EST. The game will be televised on ESPN+.
