No. 11 Iowa State visits Morgantown this weekend to take on conference opponent West Virginia in their first-ever Coal Rush game.
Iowa State is 5-0, while the Mountaineers are 3-2. Both teams have started undefeated in Big 12 play with a record of 2-0.
Let’s go back and visit the history of these two programs.
West Virginia has the series advantage all-time with a 6-5 record against the Cyclones. Their first matchup was in 2012 when WVU joined the Big 12.
The following year, 2013, the Mountaineers lost at home in triple overtime. However, from 2014 to 2017, West Virginia had the longest winning streak in the series, four games.
Iowa State went on to win three straight matchups from 2018-2020. WVU won in 2021, and the Cyclones won the last matchup in 2022.
West Virginia is 3-2 at home and 3-3 away. Their largest margin of victory was 49-19 in 2016 and their smallest was 20-16 in 2017.
