After defeating Oklahoma State 38-14 on Saturday, West Virginia’s ranking has improved in ESPN’s latest FPI (Football Power Index).
The FPI measures a team’s ‘strength’ and predicts how they will perform in future games. WVU is now ranked No. 33 in the FPI, one spot behind Pittsburgh, which is 5- 0.
With a 7.9 FPI after Saturday’s victory, WVU jumped from No. 51 and probabilities/projections surrounding the team also improved. They are the fourth-highest-ranked team in the Big 12 behind Iowa State, Kansas State, and Colorado.
Their projected win-loss ratio is now 6.9-5.4. The FPI gives the Mountaineers an 80.1% chance of reaching six wins (becoming bowl-eligible), an 11.2% chance of winning the conference, a 6.2% chance of making the playoffs, a 1% chance of winning out, and a 0.3% chance of making the National Championship.
West Virginia faces a tough task this week as they host No. 11-ranked (in the AP Poll) Iowa State. The game will be a “Coal Rush” game for WVU, kicking off at 8 p.m. EST and being televised on FOX.
