In a 38-14 win over Oklahoma State on Saturday, West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene went down early after a big run and was briefly replaced by Nicco Marchiol.
Marchiol stepped right in and ran the offense, helping lead them to two scores to increase their lead early. After the game, Greene talked about his relationship with Marchiol and his performance in the win.
“I was preoccupied (with injury) for the majority part of when he was in that first half. But me and Nicco we meet a lot we talk a lot. So the confidence that I have in him, that the wide receivers and the o-line and the running backs have in him, he’s going to be a phenomenal player here (West Virginia),” Greene said.
On one of the first plays he was in, Marchiol hit Traylon Ray on a slant to give WVU their first touchdown of the game, on his only throw of the game. However, he contributed in the run game while he was under center.
“He stepped up really really big when I went down. He also trucked somebody which if he wants to play a full season probably not the best,” Greene said. “But no he’s a great player an even better person so I’m happy he came in and did well.”
Marchiol finished with 46 rushing yards on seven carries and had that touchdown throw for 10 yards. With Greene being a senior, the redshirt sophomore will look to attempt to fill his shoes when his time in Morgantown is up.
Now 3-2 on the season (2-0 in conference play), West Virginia will host Iowa State in Week 7 in their ‘Coal Rush’ game.
