True Freshman ‘Stepped Up’ During Bye Week, Will Play This Season, Brown Says

During his radio show at Kegler’s with Tony Caridi on Thursday, West Virginia head coach Neal Brown spoke about the bye week and highlighted Israel “Jacob” Boyce.

Boyce is a true freshman listed as a safety from Douglasville, Georgia. Brown has referred to Boyce many times as a true freshman that has caught his eye.

“He’s a guy that really stepped up and had a great week for us,” Brown said of Boyce. “He may get into the rotation this week, but as the year goes on, he’s going to play.”

The bye week provided a chance to evaluate players further, specifically freshmen. Continuing to impress, Boyce may gradually see defensive snaps, getting playing time and experience.

The 5-foot-11 defensive back was a three-star recruit in the class of 2024. In addition to West Virginia, he received Power Four offers from Boston College and Cincinnati.
