While West Virginia is on a bye week, head coach Neal Brown plans to continue evaluating his team and making improvements.
This week, on the United Bank Playbook with Tony Caridi, Brown mentioned three improvements he expects his team to make on offense.
“We’ve got to do a better job of valuing the football. We’re turning the football over way too much,” Brown started.
Through four weeks, the West Virginia offense has fumbled eight times, five of which were recovered and thrown five. Their current turnover ratio is -5.
“The second thing is we’ve got to complete balls at a higher percentage. We’ve got to be able to do that,” Brown said.
The Mountaineers’ quarterbacks, Garrett Greene and Nicco Marchiol, have a combined completion percentage of 57.4%. Greene, the starter, has a completion percentage of 56.8%, an improvement compared to last year but considered not great.
“The third thing is we got to be better on third down and just end the possession downs together,” Brown said.
WVU is 31.92% on third down, but 83.33%. Most fourth-down situations that West Virginia attempts are short distance-to-go marks compared to third-downs. The Mountaineers were 7-for-13 on third downs against Kansas.
Brown and company will travel to Stillwater to take on Oklahoma State on Oct. 5 in their next contest. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. EST and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
