Sophomore wide receiver Rodney Gallagher III came up with the big catch late to help complete the Mountaineers’ comeback vs. Kansas.
It was Gallagher’s first touchdown of his young collegiate career and he also finished the game with a career-high 41 receiving yards. West Virginia head coach Neal Brown credited his receiver and explained what to expect out of his role in the future.
“He’s done a nice job with the ball in his hands. He had two nice runs, had a great punt return and then he did some really good things. And I was proud because he’s really been unselfish, and he was rewarded [for] that with the game-winning catch,” Brown said.
Although he didn’t play defense against Kansas, WVU has been trying Gallagher out as a two-way player. Brown spoke on the plan for Gallagher’s future.
“I think we’ll get back this week and start working him back on defense,” Brown said of Gallagher. “We’ll get him back in the mix defensively this week, and with an expectation, we’ll get some of our receivers back too.”
So far this season, Gallagher has already surpassed his receiving yards from last year as a freshman. This season, he has eight catches for 121 yards and a touchdown, compared to 10 catches for 74 yards last year.
West Virginia is on a bye week but will return to action on Oct. 5 when they take on conference opponent Oklahoma State on the road.
