In West Virginia’s 32-28 win over Kansas on Saturday, many Mountaineers were banged up and left the game at points, primarily on defense.
While some ended up coming back, such as Garnett Hollis, WVU head coach Neal Brown gave some intermediate updates on Monday.
“Defensively, we were scrambling a little bit with injuries at some key positions,” Brown said of Saturday’s game.
A key injury was Aubrey Burks’, who was taken off in a stretcher but later was seen walking around under his own power in good spirits. Other players were helped off and all the injuries seemed to come around the same time, all on the defensive side of the ball.
“(I’m) hopeful that we’ll have everybody back. On a couple of the upper body injuries you just got to wait and see how the first few days go post. And so, but (I’m) hopeful. Other than some of the head stuff I feel confident everybody else will be back,” Brown said.
When speaking of Burks injury, Brown reiterated that he was hopeful and that it takes more time to tell. He also said he wasn’t sure of the exact play it occurred on, as Burks didn’t show any signs until after the fact.
“Hopeful. I’ll know more about those situations take, upwards of five days to kind of get a good picture of where it’s at. I would say hopeful right now, we’ll see how he does,” Brown said. “It was an injury that he took during a play. And it really didn’t affect him until he was on the bench, and that’s kind of when yeah, when the situation occurred.”
West Virginia is currently on a bye week, which should greatly help them recover from Saturday’s physicality and injuries. When they return from the bye week, they’ll travel to Stillwater to take on Oklahoma State.
