The season has not started exactly how West Virginia wants it to, especially in the Pitt game last week.
Against their long-standing rivals, the Mountaineers failed to produce and protect their lead late, losing in a heartbreaker. With the loss, many fans have been perplexed about how the game concluded and have expressed their frustration.
“Listen we own it. We didn’t get it done. It’s a rivalry game, and we had it in our grasp and didn’t finish,” head coach Neal Brown said.
While up 10 in the final five minutes of the game on Saturday, WVU let up consecutive touchdowns on drives of over 75 yards, which led the Panthers to pick up the win. Brown wants his team to acknowledge the corrections that need to be made but move on from the past result as a whole without dwelling on it.
“We’re not going to feel sorry for ourselves. We’re not going to sit around and be miserable. There is people with real problems in this world, and it’s not us, and we didn’t play good enough in the game of football,” Brown said.
With nine conference games coming up, Brown just wants his team to get back to work. It starts with Kansas on Saturday, as the Mountaineers look to fix their mistakes and move forward.
“We got to get it fixed and we will. And you go to work. And the mentality’s got to be that: we got one football game and the focus is on Kansas. And at times, we’ve shown that we’re a good football team, and at times, we haven’t,” Brown said. “We got to be able to defend our home turf, it’s Hall of Fame weekend.”
West Virginia vs. Kansas kicks off at noon EST on Saturday. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
