Where West Virginia Ranks in ESPN’s FPI

ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) is a rating system updated weekly that measures team strength and expected outcomes using a formula developed by the company.

It gives each team an FPI, as well as projections for wins, losses, and many other probabilities. With a record of 1-1, West Virginia currently ranks No. 47 with an FPI of 3.9, and the 2-0 Pittsburgh Panthers, whom they’ll face this weekend in the Backyard Brawl, are No. 53 with an FPI of 3.2.

ESPN’s FPI expects the Mountaineers to have around 5.8 wins to 6.3 losses. They give WVU a 54.3% chance of finishing with six or more wins and just a 0.1% chance of winning out.

In terms of the Big 12 and playoffs, according to the FPI, West Virginia has a 2.7% chance of winning the Big 12 and a 2.3% chance of making the playoffs. They’re given a 0.1% chance of making the National Championship and a flat 0% likelihood of winning it.
