WVU Linebacker Trey Lathan spoke to the media on Monday leading up to the Backyard Brawl and took some time to talk about where he feels he is at mentally and physically after being almost a year removed from a broken leg that sidelined him for over half the season a year ago.
When asked if he feels all the way back and in a groove after what happened last season, Lathan answered saying, “I think I’m still feeling my way a little bit but I am definitely getting back to where I used to be.”
The injury occurred during Lathan’s redshirt freshman season, one that was starting off on a very positive note. In just five games of action, the linebacker finished with 27 total tackles, two passes defended, and one forced fumble.
This season Lathan is now back in the starting lineup after the injury and having to mentally adjust his play, “Just playing without fear. I would say that is the biggest thing. Just knowing that my leg is okay and that nothing is every going to happen to it again.”
Lathan also added when asked if there was ever a big mental hurdle, “When I first started Spring practices I was a little bit intimidated but now it just feels like normal.”
In the two games this season, Lathan has put together 11 total tackles included 1.5 tackles for loss and has been playing great with another young linebacker, true sophomore Ben Cutter who replaced Lathan last season after the injury.
