Former West Virginia shortstop JJ Wetherholt was named the Florida State League Position Player of the Week for Single-A.
After an impressive college career, Wetherholt became the highest-drafted Mountaineer ever when he was selected No. 7 overall by the St.Louis Cardinals in the most recent MLB Drafts in July. He currently plays for St.Louis’ Single-A affiliate, the Palm Beach Cardinals.
Over the past week, the Cardinals’ No. 1 prospect had 14 hits and nine RBIs, which was the most among not only every minor leaguer but every major leaguer. So far in his young professional career, Wetherholt is hitting .295, with 20 RBIs and two home runs.
The former Golden Spikes Award finalist is the No. 18 overall prospect in all of baseball.
