During West Virginia’s 49-14 victory over UAlbany on Saturday, defensive lineman Edward Vesterinen was injured on a play and was helped off by trainers.
Vestirenen, a senior and native of Finland, did not return to the game. He had one tackle, half a tackle for loss in the win.
“I think, well, we got an MRI, they got it back, so probably he’ll probably be out a few weeks,” West Virginia head coach Neal Brown said on Vesterinen. “We’ll kind of determine how long, I’ll know better on Monday.”
Vesterinen was a crucial member of the Mountaineers’ defensive line last year, able to play both interior and on the edge. He was an All-Big 12 Conference Honorable-Mention (Coaches).
In 2023, he started all 13 games, with 28 total tackles (10 solo), four-and-a-half tackles-for-loss and three sacks. With Vesterinen out for extended time, West Virginia will look to exercise their depth on the defensive line. Expect to see more of Asani Redwood or Hammond Russell.
