The season has yet to start for WVU Volleyball but new Head Coach Jen Greeny has already been making in impact in changing the culture around the team in Morgantown and spoke to the media about some of those changes.
As recently posted by the WVU Sports accounts, the WVU Volleyball team recently redid the floor design that includes a volleyball specific type of flooring that can be rolled out onto the floor. Greeny said that most top 50 programs in the country use this floor and it can change the way the game is played in Morgantown.
“It was my idea. When I was hired, Wren Baker and I made a deal that we are trying to get this done because I think it is such a huge advantage for our players because I think it cuts down on injuries and the wear and tear on their bodies. And then for recruiting and being able to host tournaments, it just sets the tone that volleyball is being invested in here at West Virginia.”
When it comes to the roster, WVU is in a rebuild phase and with that comes some younger players. However, some of those younger players are returners for WVU and Greeny is very thrilled with what that group has meant to the team leading up to the start of the season.
“The group of returners that we have have been great. They’ve been extremely excited to just get to work and learn our system. There are tremendous people and students as well so that’s been great.”
A major talking point during Greeny’s media availability was trying to build the game of volleyball up in the entire state of West Virginia. Attendance for WVU volleyball has dropped over the years so it will be a challenge to build it back up and get fans excited for games like some other areas of the country.
However, the new head coach is taking the challenge head on and starting down at the younger levels to rise the game from the ground up.
“I’ve told a lot of (high school) coaches throughout the state we are happy to do anything for them, to connect with them, if they need anything or want to come to practice, we want to be very very accessible to volleyball players, coaches, and fans throughout the state.”
WVU Volleyball plays their first game of the season on Friday, Aug. 30 at 3 p.m. ET against Navy to kick off the Wake Forest Invitational. They will play two follow up games the following two days against host school Wake Forest and then Hofstra to close the Invitational on Sunday.
