On National Signing Day in December of 2023, West Virginia “flipped” and signed four-star wide receiver recruit Ric’Darious ‘DayDay’ Farmer, who was expected to sign to UCF, where he was committed to for several months.
Farmer was not with WVU for spring ball, but in fall camp thus far has shown shades of explosiveness. The 5-foot-11 165-pound freshman receiver from Melbourne, Florida was also committed to Pitt at a point and held offers from Arizona State, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Miami, Michigan State, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Penn State, Purdue, Texas A&M and Virginia.
“He’s got twitch and he’s got some explosiveness and he’s a lot stronger than maybe his body type looks which is going to give him the ability to play and not just be a guy that goes in there when we’re going to get him the ball or be a decoy. He can block on the perimeter and those type of things he’s made several competitive plays,” West Virginia head coach Neal Brown said of Famer. “Excited about him. We liked him in recruiting you know we beat a lot of people for him. And so he’s earning, he’s going to earn some playing time if he continues this.”
Although Farmer may not be a bona fide starter from day one, the Mountaineers are looking to utilize him early in his collegiate career and develop him for years to come. So far, coaches have empathized getting the ball in his hands due to his ability to make plays and move in the open field, but are also impressed by his willingness to be a team player.
“DayDay, he’s going to be special. [He’s got] a lot of talent,” Offensive coordinator Chad Scott said last week. “He fits in our offense perfectly. Has great skills, he’s a tough kid, he’s shown the ability already to block the perimeter, he’s willing to do it. He’s showing the ability (for) four days to be able to do it and he’s dynamic, absolutely dynamic.”
