WVU Baseball Gains Two Commitments from the Same High School

First baseman C.J. Alfano and pitcher Luke Coats, both Class of 2026 prospects, had their commitments to West Virginia University announced on social media earlier today.

Both athletes attend St. Anthony’s High School in New York and helped lead their team to a NSCHSAA championship in 2024.

Alfano is the #1 ranked first baseman in New York and is the #313 prospect in his class, according to Perfect Game. The left-hander used to pitch as well, getting his fastball up to 86 mph. Last season, Alfano hit for a .301 batting average with 25 hits in 27 total games. he also batted in 20 runs.

Coats is a right-handed pitcher who boasts a 92 mph fastball at just 16 years old. His pitch mix also features an 85 mph changeup, a 76 mph curveball, and a 73 mph slider. Last season, Coats went 5-2 in nine appearances, managing a 3.47 earned run average. Coats is also the #500 ranked prospect in the nation, according to Perfect Game.
