Javon Small speaks to media about upcoming basketball season

Javon Small took to the podium for WVU Basketball’s media availability to talk public and answer questions all about the direction of the new program and everything involved in his transfer process.

Coming into the upcoming season, Small is coming from Oklahoma State after spending the two years prior at Eastern Carolina. As a Cowboy, the guard averaged 15 points, four rebounds, and four assists. He also shot 37 percent from behind the three point line.

The transfer was a big time pick up for the new WVU head coach Darian DeVries, one that could help turn a program that finished last in the Big 12 a year ago and picked 15th as well in the upcoming season.

During the time behind the microphone, Small was asked about his transfer process and what living in Morgantown has been.

“It’s a pretty good college town, pretty nice small town. I don’t do nothing except play video games and hit the gym anyways but it’s a comfortable city to be in. You know, stay focused and stay low.”

It should be music to Mountaineer fans’ ears hearing a player that likes to stay low and just focus on basketball considering the state and controversy that has followed the team over the last year.

It is always a question that the media and fans want to know, why do players choose WVU over any other school that has their interest? For Small, it was clear when he was watching the new and improved roster being constructed that Morgantown became a place where he saw himself fitting right in at.

“I’ve seen another big piece coming in with Tuck(er DeVries), I’ve seen the coaching staff as far as Coach DeVries, I’ve known coach Frazier when I was in high school so I’m familiar with the staff… Just everybody coming in, I think everyone wants to win and everyone has the right mindset.”

Small will be in his fourth year of college basketball and could be a very important veteran piece. Not only does he have four years of experience under his belt, but as a Cowboy, Small will also be in his second season in the Big 12.

“I definitely consider myself a vet, this is my 4th year coming into college basketball so I definitely look at myself as a vet. I feel like I need to be one of those players who’s a leader, you know, kind of teach some of the players who don’t know as much as I do.”
