WVU Basketball alum Gabe Osabuohien is once again giving back to the community that cheered him on for three seasons.
Osabuohien announced Monday that he will be hosting a backpack giveaway for the second year in a row in efforts of supporting children in the St. Albans, Logan, Fairmont, Morgantown, Grafton, Roane, and Glenville areas in West Virginia. The event will run from August 2 to August 10, with the giveaway dates for each city being announced July 28.
Last year, Osabuohien’s giveaway provided necessary school supplies to 85 kids in West Virginia. Osabuohien called the impact small at the time but emphasized that any support helps the community and that he looks to grow the giveaway each year.
Osabuohien, who now plays forward for the NBA G-League’s Cleveland Charge, came to Morgantown from Arkansas, where he spent his high school career and his first collegiate season. He was born and raised in Toronto with two siblings, where he recalls not always having the school supplies he needed, according to his 2023 giveaway announcement.
Now, Osabuohien finds himself giving back to the community that continues to support him. The WVU community raised $15,000 last June when Osabuohien was seriously injured in a car accident. Just months later, Osabuohien announced the formation of his back-to-school giveaway, which carries forth the idea that Mountaineers support each other.
