MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (July 1, 2024) – The West Virginia University volleyball team will celebrate the program’s 50-year anniversary in 2024. Throughout the season, fans can relive the program’s most memorable moments with acknowledgments of the team’s history.
The Mountaineers will celebrate 50 years of varsity status dating back to 1974. Judy Thomas was named the program’s first head coach, leading the squad for one season.
In 1975, the legendary Veronica Hammersmith was named the second head coach in program history, becoming the mainstay of Mountaineer volleyball for 35 seasons.
In celebration of this milestone, the Mountaineers will host an alumni celebration during WVU’s Nov. 17 match against Big 12 newcomer Arizona. All alumni in attendance will be recognized with an in-game ceremony, while fans will receive a commemorative cup featuring the 50 years of volleyball logo.
West Virginia fans can expect in-game elements throughout the season, as well as guest appearances and recognitions, recap videos and features, giveaways and much more during the alumni match versus Arizona.
