For the first time since 2019, when Alek Manoah was drafted, West Virginia has a projected first-round pick in shortstop JJ Wetherholt.
Wetherholt had a breakout season in 2023, when he hit .449 with 36 stolen bases and 16 home runs, finishing as a Golden Spikes award finalist. He was slated for a big junior season in 2024, but suffered a hamstring injury in the Mountaineers opening series of the season against Stetson. Despite that, he finished with a .331 average and eight homers, receiving All-America and All-Conference honors.
Wetherholt is regarded as one of the top college prospects in next month’s MLB Draft, receiving multiple projections within the top 10 picks. The MLB Draft takes place July 14-16, the following will take a look at current projections of where Wetherholt will be selected.
