Javon Small Brings Big 12 Experience, Elite Scoring Potential to WVU

Oklahoma State guard transfer Javon Small was the sixth player to commit and officially sign with the West Virginia men’s basketball team this offseason.

Small is coming off one season in the Big 12 with the Cowboys, before spending his first two in college with East Carolina. This past season, the rising senior from South Bend, Indiana averaged 15.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. His averages in points and assists led OSU, making him an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention.

The 6-foot-3 guard’s career and season-high in points came against BYU in the last game of regular season conference play, when he scored 34 on March 9. He had two double-doubles this season, one against Notre Dame, the college from his hometown, with 29 points and 10 rebounds on Nov. 17, 2023 and one against WVU with 15 points and 12 rebounds on Jan. 27.

Small saw a massive improvement in his freshman and sophomore campaigns at ECU. In his freshman year in 2021-2022, he did not make a single start, playing in 16 games, averaging just two points and just over an assist per game. In his sophomore season, he started in 17 of the 18 games he played, becoming one of the Pirates’ top scorers, averaging 15.8 ppg, while also averaging 5.6 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game, before a leg injury ended his season.

“We are excited to have Javon joining our program,” WVU head coach Darian DeVries said. “He is a tremendous playmaker at both ends of the floor. He has a great feel for the game and can hurt you as a scorer and a facilitator. We look forward to having our fans watch him compete this upcoming season.”

The rising senior comes to Morgantown with experience in the daunting Big 12 basketball conference, having shown a strong ability to score at various levels.
