Two former WVU players and one coach make first time appearance on CFB Hall of Fame Ballot

Three former Mountaineers will appear on the College Football hall of Fame ballot for the first time. Steve Slaton, Aaron Beasley, and Coach Jim Carlen will represent West Virginia University on the ballot.

Slaton, a running back, played for WVU from 2005-2007 before being drafted in the third round in 2008. During his three years wearing the Gold and Blue, Slaton compiled a total of 3,923 rushing yards and 55 total touchdowns.

In his sophomore season, the running back finished with 1,744 yards in 13 games, or 134 yards per game.

The other player on the ballot that repped the gold and blue is defensive back Aaron Beasley. Beasley played as a Mountaineer from 1992-1995 and was an All-American selection during his Junior season.

That year he finished with 10 interceptions, 10 tackles for loss, and two sacks. In his career, he had a total of 19 interceptions, and 38 pass break-ups. He was a third round draft selection in the 1996 NFL Draft.

The only WVU coach on the ballot this year is Jim Carlen who coached West Virginia for four seasons from 1966-1969. His last two seasons, Carlen would lead a 7-3 team and then finally a 10-1 Peach Bowl winning team before taking a job at Texas Tech.

Carlen finished with a 25–13–3 (.658) record at WVU and would go on to also coach South Carolina’s only heisman trophy winner, running back George Rogers. Over the course of his entire head coaching career, Carlen had a record of 107–69–6.

The voting will open up to the members of The National Football Foundation starting now and will be open up until July 1. The ceremony for those selected will be held on December 9.
