West Virginia Vice president and athletic director Wren Baker, responded to a fan’s tweet on Thursday, possibly hinting at the return of an old school helmet.
With the New York Giants of the NFL releasing a new uniform commemorating their 100-year history, a WVU fan took to Twitter with his wishes of what he hoped the Mountaineers would do for a throwback, to which he received a response from Baker.
“If WVU ever wants to do a wacky football throwback, similar to what the Giants just revealed, I hope they do either 1965 or 1973-78 with a more metallic gold helmet” @shackalocious tweeted Thursday.
Both helmets use a logo previous to the Flying WV, which was introduced in 1980, with the logos on the helmets being the state’s shape with the letters WVU going down from right to left on a slope. The 1965 helmet, which Baker comments on specifically is a metallic gold helmet featuring the states shape in baby blue, outlined in white, with the WVU being bulky navy blue block letters, with old gold background.
“I am a MASSIVE fan of that ‘65 helmet with the baby blue state sticker. 2025-1965 = 60 years,” Baker replied to the post. Baker tagged head coach Neal Brown, to which Brown replied with an encouraging emoji.
West Virginia recently released black uniforms on-top of their new full line of uniforms. With Baker and Brown’s reply a throwback set could also be in the works for the future.
