After spending his freshman year at Illinois, Amani Hansberry became the third transfer to officially sign with West Virginia.
Hansberry was a four-star recruit coming out of high school, No. 1 player recruit in Maryland and 68th nationally in the class of 2023 according to 247Sports.Like Sencire Harris, another Illinois transfer that he visited WVU with, was recruited by Chester Frazier, the Mountaineers’ new associate head coach under Darian DeVries. Hansberry was Maryland’s 2022-2023 Gatorade MaxPreps High School Player Boy’s Basketball of the Year.
Hansberry was recruited by WVU coming out of high school and also had offers from several Power Five programs including LSU, Miami, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Penn State, Pitt, Tennesse, Texas A&M and Wake Forrest, among others. He played on the Team Durant AAU team and was included in a documentary about the team made by Boardroom.
The 6-foot-8 forward played in 19 games this past season, averaging 2.4 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. He notched a season-high eight points and seven boards against Southern on Nov. 19, 2023. Hansberry would match his season-high in points in Illinois’ final game of the season in the NCAA tournament against the eventual champion UCONN Huskies.
Hansberry is ranked as the 183rd-best Men’s basketball transfer this cycle by On3. As a rising sophomore, he will have multiple years of eligibility and can be apart of a solid core the Mountaineers can build around for the near future.
