Chumley Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 15, 2024) – Senior Reed Chumley of the West Virginia University baseball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

Chumley had at least one hit in all three games over the weekend against No. 17 UCF, the biggest being a walk-off home run on April 14, to secure the sweep over the Knights.

He also added a home run on April 13, which came after a two-hit performance on Friday evening.

Chumley and the rest of the Mountaineers will be back at home this Tuesday, April 16, for the Backyard Brawl against Pitt with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET. 

This Week in Baseball: West Virginia plays four games this week, beginning with the Backyard Brawl against Pitt on Tuesday, April 16, at Kendrick Family Ballpark … first pitch against the Panthers is set for 6:30 p.m. ET … the Mountaineers will then hit the road this weekend for a three-game series against Texas Tech … first pitch on Friday, April 19, is set for 7:30 p.m., Saturday for 3 p.m. ET, and Sunday for 2 p.m. ET.

Last Week in Baseball: The Mountaineers went 3-1 on the week, dropping a midweek contest to Marshall, 3-2, in 11 innings before coming back to sweep No. 17 UCF in Morgantown … WVU defeated the Knights on April 12, 7-6, with junior Kyle West having three hits, including a home run, and four RBI … on April 13, the Mountaineers took down UCF, 7-5 … junior JJ Wetherholt, senior Reed Chumley and sophomore Sam White each hit home runs … senior Derek Clark went nine innings for the fourth straight to pick up his third complete game of the season … on Sunday, Chumley hit a walk-off home run as the Mountaineers won, 11-10, in 11 innings … West and Wetherholt also hit home runs in the victory … sophomore Gavin Van Kempen earned the win with 3.2 hitless innings in relief.

Notes: It is the second straight weekend that West Virginia has pulled off a sweep after taking all three at Kansas a week ago as well … the Mountaineers have now won seven straight Big 12 games and sit atop the standings at 11-4 alongside Oklahoma … it was the first sweep of a ranked team for WVU since at least 1993 … Chumley’s walk-off home run was the first for the Mountaineers since Mikey Kluska’s against Central Michigan in 2021 … he is the first Mountaineer to reach double-digit home runs this year … Clark leads the Big 12 with a 2.15 ERA among qualified pitchers.

This Week in Tennis: West Virginia will compete in the 2024 Big 12 Tennis Championship at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma … West Virginia’s opponent has yet to be announced.

Last Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers lost to No. 27 Texas Tech, 4-0, on April 11 … WVU lost to No. 44 BYU, 4-0, on April 13, to finish the regular season. 

Notes: West Virginia’s 11-1 record through 12 matches was its best record to start the season since 1986 when the team began 12-0 … for the first time in program history, WVU has won multiple Big 12 matches in a single season … with the win against Houston, the Mountaineers have their most wins (14) in a season since 2010.

This Week in Golf: West Virginia closes out the regular season on Monday, April 15, and Tuesday, April 16, as it hosts the Mountaineer Invitational at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia … West Virginia won the team titles in April 2021, in 2019 and 2018 … tee times will begin at 8:15 a.m. ET on Monday with all 16 teams scheduled to play 36 holes on Monday and then 18 holes on Tuesday, starting at 8:30 a.m. … the event is free and open to the public.

Last Week in Golf: West Virginia did not compete.

This week in Track & Field: The Mountaineers will serve as host for the Mountaineer Twilight on April 19-20, at the Track and Field Complex at Mylan Park in Morgantown … additionally, the squad will travel to the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Virginia, on April 19-20, which will be held at Lannigan Field.

Last week in Track & Field: West Virginia split the weekend at the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 12-13, in Azusa, California, and the Bison Outdoor Classic on April 13-14, in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania … redshirt junior Cassandra Williamson highlighted the weekend for West Virginia in Azusa, shattering the program record in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:04.51 … Williamson went on to add the fastest time for West Virginia in the 400-meter race with a time of 56.37 … freshman Kishay Rowe trailed behind Williamson in the 400-meter race with a personal best time of 56.83 … freshman Mary Delaney concluded competition for the Mountaineers in Azusa in the 1,500 meters with a personal best time of 4:31.96.

At the Bison Outdoor Classic, redshirt sophomore Tatiana Moura raced in the women’s 1,500-meter invitational, adding a time of 4:39.46 … Aubrie Custer also collected a personal best in the women’s 1,500-meter open, etching a mark of 4:59.82 … the Bison Outdoor Classic was highlighted by redshirt sophomore Emily Bryce and freshman Eva Rinker who ran for times of 2:16.86 and 2:17.29, respectively … Rinker’s time marked a personal best in the event.

Notes: With Williamson’s performance, the redshirt junior currently ranks No. 6 in the Big 12 in the women’s 800 meters while Rowe ranks No. 15 in the event with her time at the Bryan Clay Invitational.

This Week in Rowing: West Virginia will compete in the George Mason Invitational on Sunday, April 21, at Sandy Run Regional Park in Fairfax, Virginia.

Last Week in Rowing: West Virginia competed in the George Washington Invitational from April 12-13, at the Thompson Boat Center in Washington, D.C.
