Following a rough season for WVU men’s basketball that included the most losses in a season in program history, the Mountaineers hired Darian DeVries as their next head coach.
DeVries was an assistant at Creighton for many years before bringing Drake University unprecedented success as head coach, winning 20+ games every season he was there (six).
College basketball analyst Jay Bilas, who was a former player and coach that now works for ESPN gave major credit to DeVries, believing West Virginia made the right move.
“Darian DeVries is a proven leader and basketball coach, and one of the brightest young coaches in the game. He took his experience working under Dana Altman and Greg McDermott to another level as head coach at Drake,” Bilas said. “And there is no doubt he will be a success at West Virginia. Darian has put his time in and he is the real thing. West Virginia found the right coach in Darian DeVries.”
DeVries will be joined by his son Tucker in Morgantown, who was a two-time Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year and averaged over 20 points per game last season at Drake. DeVries also made his first staff hire on Wednesday, bringing Nick Norton in, who he had on his staff at Drake.
The Mountaineers have work to do in the transfer portal, which should speed up with DeVries settling in and continuing to build his staff. WVU will open up their season at home against Robert Morris on Nov. 4.
