West Virginia men’s basketball officially hired Darian DeVries as the 23rd head coach and now details of his contract have been revealed.
Justin Jackson of The Dominion Post reports DeVries will make $2.8 million in year one and $100,000 will be added throughout the next four seasons. WVU will also pay DeVries’ buyout at Drake, although a specific figure on that amount is not given.
If West Virginia finishes in the top six in the Big 12 during the first two seasons under DeVries he will receive an automatic one-year extension. If WVU fires DeVries before his contract is complete, they would owe him 75 percent of the remaining compensation as his buyout. However if DeVries leaves for a different school, he would owe WVU 37.5 percent of his remaining contract.
WVU is also covering DeVries’ expenses, as Jackson reports they are paying $100,000 for relocation.
Incentives include $200,000 for winning a national championship, $40,000 for winning the Big 12 Tournament, and $20,000 if season ticket sales surpass 6,000, among other incentives, according to Jackson.
DeVries signed a five-year deal, and it was signed on March 24.
