Akron comes to town to face the Mountaineers

The WVU baseball team will play the Akron Zips at Kendrick Family Ballpark in Morgantown on Tuesday.

The Mountaineers are coming off a huge series win over Big 12 opponent Oklahoma over the weekend, where they took both games of a doubleheader on Saturday in an impressive offensive display after getting no-hit on Friday. West Virginia is now 14-10 on the season and nearing entering their game against Akron.

Reed Chumley leads WVU with a .339 batting average and 43 total bases, also tied with Grant Hussey for a team-leading five home runs. Sam White leads the team in RBIs with 16.

6-foot-6 righty sophomore Gavin Van Kempen will get the start for the Mountaineers. He has a 4-1 record this season, pitching 13.2 innings with 20 strikeouts to eight walks and a 3.29 ERA. Akron is yet to name a starter.

The Zips are 5-17 this season, 1-8 in the MAC. They are coming off getting swept by Bowling Green this past weekend, where they were out-scored 36-12 in the series.

Freshman Nicky Sackett leads Akron with a .313 average, while senior Max Bowman leads the team with 13 RBIs and is tied with redshirt junior Sam Seeker for the most home runs for the Zips with two.

First pitch will be at 6:30 EST with the game being streamed to ESPN+.
