Darian DeVries is set to become the next head West Virginia men’s basketball coach.
According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, DeVries and WVU are closing in on a five-year deal to make him the next coach at WVU.
DeVries has spent the last six seasons at Drake in the Missouri Valley Conference. He has had a winning season in each of those six seasons, with his fewest win total being 20, and his most coming this past season with 28. The 20 wins in his five consecutive seasons is the only time in Drake history there have been five consecutive seasons of 20-plus wins.
Drake made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances as well as winning back-to-back conference tournaments under DeVries’ guidance.
His all-time record as a head coach at Drake is 150-55. This year, Drake was a No. 10 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and lost to Washington State in the first round of the tournament, 66-61.
DeVries is a two-time Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year earning the honor in the 2018-2019 season as well as the 2020-2021 season. DeVries is originally from Iowa, and was an assistant coach at Creighton for 17 years and spent a total of 20 seasons on Creighton’s staff.
All of this for West Virginia comes after the Mountaineers were in transition after longtime head coach Bob Huggins resigned last summer as a result of multiple off the court incidents. His former assistant Josh Eilert served as the interim head coach for one season before West Virginia University announced they would conduct a national search beginning on Mar. 13.
Darian DeVries is 48 years old and has a son Tucker who averaged 21.6 points per game at Drake this season. He also has a daughter Tatum, and is married to his wife, Ashley.
