On Sunday it was announced that WVU would be hiring Darian DeVries to be their next men’s basketball head coach.
Former legendary Villanova head coach and college hoops analyst Jay Wright would talk about the hire live on Tournament Central during the coverage of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.
“Great hire, he (DeVries) is a great guy X and O guy, a great program builder,” Wright said.
DeVries went 150-55 at the helm of Drake and most recently led the Bulldogs to a March Madness appearance, where they were seeded No. 10 in the East region, where they fell to No. 7-seeded Washington State 66-61.
“If he comes without his son, he’s going to be great for West Virginia, they’re going to love him. It’s a kind of guy I can see staying there for a long time,” Wright said.” If he brings his son with him, Tucker DeVries is one of those guys that was playing a level below where he could, which is fine. He took their team to the NCAA tournament, but he can play in the Big 12 and he’s a good enough player to be there.”
Tucker is expected to join his dad in Morgantown according to Jeff Goodman. The 6-foot-7 guard/forward was the back-to-back Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year and averaged 21.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game this season, shooting 44.4% from the field.
