Oklahoma threw a no-hitter as West Virginia baseball lost game one of their three-game series against Oklahoma, 13-0 on Friday night.
The Mountaineers struggled out of the gate, while Oklahoma was dominant on both the mound and from the plate, as WVU was no-hit for the 10th time in school history and the first time since Mar. 20, 1982.
Aidan Major had been really good for WVU on Friday night’s through the first month of the season, but he didn’t have good command and he struggled to throw strikes early.
Major gave up a walk and then a double in the first inning, and would strand two runners in scoring position as the Sooners held a 1-0 lead.
In the third the wheels would fall off for Major. The first four batters of the inning went walk, walk, single, walk, and Major’s night was done without recording an out in the second inning as he left with the bases loaded as well. Those runners would all come into score, as Oklahoma scored five in the third and took a 6-0 lead.
Major’s night was finished on 61 pitches in 2.0 innings pitched, throwing 44 percent of his pitches for strikes. He struck out two and walked six as well.
The bullpen didn’t do much better, as they gave up a combined seven runs in the third and fourth inning. Hayden Cooper relieved Major, as he tossed two innings but was also roughed up by the Sooners. Cooper threw 2.0 innings, giving up four runs on six hits. After Cooper was Cole Fehrman who walked four and recorded only two outs as he gave up four runs.
Oklahoma sent left-handed pitcher Braden Davis to the mound who carved the Mountaineers. Davis tossed seven innings, walking two and striking out 12. Reid Hensley closed out the final two innings striking out three and walking one.
Games two and three will be played Saturday in a doubleheader. Game one is set for 4:00 p.m. EST.
