It’s no secret to anyone who follows West Virginia Baseball that the team has dealt with some injuries this season. As that saying goes, it’s next man up.
That has opened up some playing time for the depth pieces on West Virginia’s baseball team. True freshman and Morgantown native Aaron Jamison has been among those to see more playing time.
Jamison has shown some flashes in his limited action, appearing in 10 of 21 games this season with four starts and 18 at-bats.
Most recently, he hit a grand slam for his first collegiate home run in the 26-11 game three loss to Ohio State on Sunday then followed that up with another home run in Wednesday’s win over Marshall.
“I was so happy for Aaron when he hit that grand slam, the hometown kid,” Coach Randy Mazey said after the Ohio State game. “I wish it would have been a 19-run homer. That was really cool for him. He has been swinging it well. So he deserves it.”
The first three of Jamison’s starts up to this season were as a designated hitter, then he got his first career start as an outfielder against the Thundering Herd. His most recent game performances could lead to him getting more playing time this season.
“Starting off the beginning of the year, I was getting around balls, wasn’t getting a true flight with some of my [at-bats],” Jamison said after yesterday’s game. “Just getting to that point finding out where I feel like really confident in where I get to. I felt a lot more consistent in the box.”
Jamison went to Morgantown High School and was the number one ranked baseball prospect in the state by Perfect Game coming out of high school in 2023. For Jamison though, he committed to WVU before he was in high school, something that has changed in recent years.
“I played a few tournaments here, and I also played with [Mazey’s] son a little bit. But before that, we played multiple tournaments here. We had like a local travel team, so got to play in front of them a lot. They gave me an offer before high school, the place where I was I wanted to play, so I had to take it.”
Jamison has played in both games for West Virginia against Marshall this season, recognizing the impact it has on the fanbase and the state as a whole, being from Morgantown.
“Especially just playing in front of the home state. Just cool growing up around this college and especially football games, basketball games, everything. I know how the fans are, and it does motivate me to have them behind me.”
Jamison and the Mountaineers will be back in action tonight as they make a visit to Oklahoma at 8 p.m. EST in Norman, OK.
