West Virginia baseball is banged up and they have been for a while.
The biggest miss of them all is shortstop JJ Wetherholt. Wetherholt played in only the first four games of the season for WVU and has been out since dealing with a hamstring injury.
Following WVU’s game one win over BYU on Thursday, head coach Randy Mazey kept Wetherholt’s status very hidden when asked about his start shortstop.
JJ and I raced the other day and I beat him. Right now, I can beat Wetherholt, Sauve, and Hussey in a race, so they’re not ready to play. Everybody asks me what the progress is on them, I say, today, they were better than they were yesterday. And tomorrow, they’ll be better than they were today.”
Hussey and Sauve both went out of the lineup late last weekend against Western Kentucky.
Prior to WVU’s game against BYU on Thursday, official word from WVU said Hussey hurt a muscle in his leg running to first and was available to pinch hit if need be on Thursday. As for Sauve, he was hit by a pitch in the knee and his status was unavailable for Thursday night.
