Jesse Edwards only spent one season in Morgantown, but certainly made his mark.
Early on this season, it was the Jesse Edwards show for WVU. With injuries, suspensions, and eligibility concerns, the team revolved around Edwards and rightfully so.
Edwards came to Morgantown after spending four seasons at Syracuse. He decided to stick it out after the coaching change, and all was going great until December. His season was somewhat derailed after a fractured thumb kept him out of the lineup for more than a month.
Edwards would come back, but not quite be the same player he was before. Edwards dealt with a wrist wrap on his hand, and struggled to shoot the ball as well as to finish at times around the rim.
Despite this though, he still put in multiple performances where he put the team on his back. Against Cincinnati, in what was Edwards’ first start back after his injury, he had a stat line of, 25 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocks. He was the first player in program history to achieve such a line.
“I really didn’t want to leave. I was quite happy here. I liked the place,” Edwards said. “I was not trying to get out of here.”
Edwards is originally from the Netherlands, coming over to America for basketball. Edwards played for their national team this past summer, and that’s a place that is still close to his heart with it being home.
Edwards has been seen as a leader of this team, but a silent one at that. He’s not the most vocal on the court, and early on when he was getting harassed by opposing defenses, he continued to put his head down and work.
This season Edwards has played in 20 games, starting 19 of them. He’s scoring 14.3 points per game, and grabbing 8.2 rebounds per game.
Edwards is in his final season of eligibility.
