Live Results Thread: Danny Berlitz and Ivan Puskovitch take top spots in men’s 200 IM at Big 12 Swimming & Diving Championships Day 3 Final Rounds

Two individuals and two relay teams represent the hosting West Virginia Mountaineers Thursday evening at the Big 12 Swimming & Diving Championships at Mylan Park.

The Texas Longhorns currently dominate the team standings after placing first in every event thus far through Tuesday and Wednesday. West Virginia ranks sixth of the eight competing women’s teams and fourth among five men’s teams.

BYU junior Jordan Tiffany became the first non-Longhorn swimmer of the week to place first in an event. Tiffany broke the Aquatic Center record and won the men’s 100 butterfly with a time of 44.51 seconds.

Following suit was WVU senior Danny Berlitz, who placed first in the men’s 200 IM. He was closely followed by graduate student Ivan Puskovitch.

Berlitz, who took home the fifth place medal in the 200 IM Wednesday, posted the top time in preliminaries for the 400 IM. Less than a second behind him was graduate student Ivan Puskovitch, who ranked third in the preliminary round and was the only Mountaineer to join Berlitz in Thursday’s finals.

In the finals, Berlitz and Puskovitch earned West Virginia’s first top-three medals in this year’s championships. Berlitz capitalized on his preliminary round momentum to grab and maintain a first-place lead throughout.

Puskovitch, an Olympic-qualifying marathon swimmer, paced himself differently, finishing the first 50-yard stretch in eighth place. He quickly moved up to third before taking second place in the final pool length to pair himself at the top with Berlitz.

Also performing well in finals for WVU was the women’s 400 medley relay team. With a time of 3:39.41, the Mountaineers placed fifth in the event.
