Live Thread: Big 12 Swimming & Diving Championships Day 2 Final Round

Final rounds in eight events begin at 5:15 p.m. at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park on the second day of the Big 12 Swimming & Diving Championships.

The hosting West Virginia Mountaineers had three swimmers in the evening’s final rounds after each placed in the top eight in preliminaries. The women’s diving team will also compete in team finals.

Freshman Ian McKinney placed seventh in the men’s 500-yard freestyle preliminaries, earning him a spot in the 6:00 finals. In those finals, McKinney finished eighth with a time of 4:27.88. McKinney fluctuated between sixth, seventh, and eighth place throughout.

Sophomore Mia Cheatwood, who set the WVU record in the 200 breaststroke Tuesday, also placed seventh in prelims to earn a finals spot in the 200 IM. Cheatwood placed eighth in the final round with a time of 2:01.04.

Ranking highest among the advancing Mountaineers on Wednesday was senior Danny Berlitz, who placed fifth in the men’s 200 IM preliminaries. Berlitz matched that placement in the finals with a time of 1:43.94.

Among top competition on day two was Texas’s Coby Carrozza, who broke his own pool record in the men’s 500 freestyle. Carrozza beat his 2022 time by over a second with a time of 4:11.95. Fifth year Longhorn Kelly Pash also broke her own pool record, finishing in 1:53.8 to earn her fifth straight Big 12 Championship title in the 200 IM.

Texas freshman Will Modglin set the team’s third pool record of the day with a time of 1:41.01 in the men’s 200 IM.
