We are a week and a half into college baseball season and the Big 12 has had a solid start to their season.
In the latest D1 Baseball Top 25 Rankings, the Big 12 has three teams represented in it: TCU at fifth, Texas at 15th, and Texas Tech at 18th.
As of games through Feb. 26, 10 out of the 13 teams are currently at or above .500 on the season. Kansas, BYU, and Baylor are the three teams that do not have a winning record.
Let’s take a look at each Big 12 team and how they fared in games during the opening weekend of college baseball. This list is sorted alphabetically.
Baylor (1-6)
Last Tuesday, Baylor won a single home game against Lamar 11-5. Baylor used 10 runs in the first three innings to propel the way to victory.
This past weekend, Baylor hosted a three-game home series against No. 23 Indiana, getting swept 8-4, 6-1, and 15-5. Baylor gave up a combined 39 hits in those three losses.
Up next for Baylor is a single home game against Abilene Christian tomorrow. After that is a three-game home series against Oral Roberts starting on Friday.
BYU (2-5)
Last Wednesday, BYU lost a single road game against California 8-0. BYU only had four hits while giving up two 2-run home runs.
At the end of last week, BYU visited UC Davis in a three-game road series, winning 20-4 then losing 6-2 and 9-5. BYU had 13 runs in one inning in the lone win while having a combined seven hits in the two losses.
Up next for BYU is a three-game home series against Gonzaga starting on Thursday. After that is a single road game against UNLV on Tuesday, March 5.
Cincinnati (3-3)
Last Tuesday, Cincinnati won a single home game against Northern Kentucky 10-2. Cincinnati had 15 hits while benefiting from four Northern Kentucky errors.
This past weekend Cincinnati appeared in the Coastal Carolina Tournament, winning against Ball State 6-5 and against Illinois 10-3, then losing to No. 25 Coastal Carolina 25-2. Coastal Carolina had a combined 23 runs in the first three innings to cruise their way to victory in their game against Cincinnati.
Up next for Cincinnati is a single road game against Xavier later today. After that is a four-game home series against Northern Illinois starting on Friday.
Houston (6-1)
Last Tuesday, Houston won a single home game against Prairie View A&M 27-1. Houston exploded for 16 runs in the first two innings, which included a grand slam, to propel the way to victory.
This past weekend, Houston hosted a three-game series against St. Johns, winning 12-6 and 7-2 and then losing 11-6. Houston went up 4-0 in their third game before St. Johns went on an 11-2 run to avoid a sweep.
Up next for Houston is a single home game against UTSA later today. After that is the Space City Hometown starting with Texas State on Friday.
Kansas (3-4)
Last Tuesday, Kansas won a single neutral site game against Texas A&M Corpus Christi 13-7. Kansas had five runs in two different innings to secure the victory.
This past weekend, Kansas participated in the Karbach Round Rock Classic, beating Texas State 7-4 and then losing to Washington State 5-4 and Kentucky 8-5. Kansas had at least 10 hits in every game.
Up next for Kansas is a four-game home series against Texas Southern this weekend. After that is a their first Big 12 series against TCU next weekend.
Kansas State (4-3)
Last Tuesday, Kansas State lost a single road game against Arizona State 9-6. Kansas State allowed 10 hits in the loss.
This past weekend, Kansas State hosted a three-game series against Holy Cross, winning 17-11, losing 13-10, and then winning again 5-4. Kansas State gave up double digits in hits the first two games before only allowing six in the third.
Up next for Kansas State is a three-game home series against UMass Lowell starting on Friday. After that is single road game against Tennessee next Tuesday.
Oklahoma (5-3)
Last Tuesday, Oklahoma lost a single road game against Dallas Baptist 11-7. Oklahoma had 12 hits while giving up 13 in the loss.
This past weekend, Oklahoma hosted a four-game series against Wright State winning 20-0, 14-9. 10-3, and then losing 12-2. Oklahoma had double digits in hits in every game except the last one.
Up next for Oklahoma is the Las Vegas College Baseball Classic this weekend starting with Pitt on Friday. After that is a single home game against Wichita State next Tuesday.
Oklahoma State (4-3)
Last Wednesday, Oklahoma State won a single neutral site game against Abilene Christian 8-4. Oklahoma State was outhit but still won.
This past weekend, Oklahoma State participated in the Kubota College Baseball Series, beating Michigan 9-3 and Arkansas 2-1 in 14 innings, then losing to Oregon State 8-1.
Up next for Oklahoma State is a single road game against Dallas Baptist later today. After that is a three-game home series against Central Michigan starting on Friday.
No. 5 TCU (7-0)
Last Tuesday, TCU won a single home game against Texas State 6-5. TCU was outhit 14-11 but still won.
This past weekend, TCU hosted a three-game series against No. 20 UCLA, sweeping them 4-3, 6-3, and then 13-3 in seven innings.
Up next for TCU is single home game against Washington State later today. After that is a single home game against Arizona tomorrow.
No. 15 Texas (6-1)
Last Tuesday, Texas won a single home game against Houston Christian 20-3. Texas had a whopping 24 hits in the win.
This past weekend, Texas swept a three-game home series against Cal Poly 2-0, 6-0, and 7-0. Texas gave up nine hits in the third game but still kept Cal Poly off the scoreboard.
Up next for Texas is a single home game against St. John’s later today. After that is the Astros Foundation College Classic at Minute Maid Park starting on Friday.
No. 18 Texas Tech (6-2)
Last Tuesday, Texas Tech won a single road game against UT Arlington 13-1. The next day, they played there against No. 7 Oregon State and lost 10-4.
This past weekend, Texas Tech swept a three-game series against Texas Southern 32-5, 20-4, and 16-5 in seven innings. Texas Tech had multiple three-run homers in game one.
Up next for Texas Tech is a three-game home series against Gardner-Webb starting on Friday. After that is a single road game against New Mexico next Tuesday.
UCF (5-0)
Last Wednesday, UCF won a single road game against Miami 4-3. The game was scoreless in the final five innings and UCF managed to squeak out the victory.
This past weekend, UCF swept a three-game home series against Samford 18-3 in seven innings, 9-6, and then 12-2 in seven innings. UCF had at least 13 hits in every game.
West Virginia (4-4)
This past weekend, West Virginia played a four-game road series against Charlotte. They won the first two 12-8 and 8-1 and then lost 3-2 and 6-5.
Up next for West Virginia is a single home game against Canisius tomorrow. After that is a four-game road series against Western Kentucky starting on Friday.
