Logan Sauve went 4-for-4, with a pair of home runs as West Virginia beat Charlotte 8-1 (7 inn.) on Saturday afternoon in game one of their doubleheader.
Sauve started the party early with a home run in the first inning, his first of the year. Sauve would come to the plate again in the second inning, Grant Hussey started the inning with his second home run in as many days, before WVU’s offense rallied with two outs.
Spencer Barnett and Skylar King walked, before Sauve singled to left field in a 3-2 count as WVU pushed across their third run of the game. They added on one more as Ben Lumsden walked to score another run and put WVU in front, 4-0.
West Virginia sent Tyler Switalski to the mound for his second start of the season, and after running into trouble early on, he settled in for the remainder of his outing.
Switalski loaded the bases in the first inning with only one out, but he got a strikeout and a groundout to get out of the jam. Switalski would not make it out of the fifth inning as Charlotte had runners on second and third, but David Hagaman was able to get the Mountaineers out of any potential mess.
Sauve hit his second home run of the day in the fourth inning, before Charlotte scored their only run of the day on a solo home run off of Switalski in the bottom of the inning.
He finished his evening pitching 4.2 innings, allowing six hits, and one run, while striking out five. Hagaman, who relieved Switalski, pitched 1.1 innings, striking out one and not allowing any damage.
Sauve finished with 5 RBIs, and three runs scored. West Virginia had only three hits as a team outside of Sauve.
