What Mark Kellogg had to say after loss to No. 10 Kansas State

No. 22 West Virginia lost to No. 10 Kansas State on the road on Wednesday night, 73-64 in overtime.

Head coach Mark Kellogg spoke after the game about how his team competed with the Wildcats.

Atmosphere

Kellogg was quick to say how much he enjoyed playing in the atmosphere and felt like the game featured two of the better teams in the country.

:That’s a really, really, good basketball team. Really, really good. They present some problems for us and a lot of teams,” Kellogg said of Kansas State.

Despite coming out on the wrong end of things, Kellogg was still proud of his team for their performance.

“Really proud of our group. I thought that was a really good women’s college basketball game. Two really good teams going kind of toe-to-toe, back-and-forth. True back-and-forth. Back-and-forth score, runs, stops.”

Where WVU Lost

West Virginia had many chances to win the game on Wednesday, but they couldn’t close it out. Part of the reason is the Mountaineers shot 35 percent from the field, and went 8-for-30 (27%) from three. They were also outscored 42-22 in the paint, and WVU went 10-for-28 on layups.

“No moral victories or anything like that for us. but like I said, I’m really, really, proud of our group. To battle back, to get the thing to overtime was special, took a couple missed free throws, of course. To our kids credit, we made some plays to get it there,” Kellogg said.

“Missed too many layups I thought. Missed wide open three’s. I think they were kind of daring us to shoot a little bit and maybe got a little hesitant from time to time. We had some layups that we missed, especially there late in the third quarter that I know we’d like to have back that probably could have gotten the lead into double figures going into the fourth. It might of changed the game a little bit.”

Gripe With Officials

By the numbers, West Virginia didn’t get a fair shake as far as free throw attempts were concerned. Kansas State shot 31 free throws, while WVU attempted eight. Kellogg didn’t get into it much, but he did briefly give his opinion.

“I didn’t think we got a great whistle at all. Not going to really go there, but that was a little disappointing for sure,” Kellogg said.
