As first reported by Kendall Rodgers of D1 baseball, West Virginia star shortstop JJ Wetherholt has a Grade 1 hamstring strain and is expected to miss “at least weekend.”
In game four of WVU’s series with Stetson, Wetherholt exited the game after the top of the first inning after walking and scoring a run. He was considered day-to-day and had tests done on Tuesday.
Wetherholt is expected to miss the Mountaineers’ upcoming four-game series with Charlotte and possibly more time as WVU looks to play it safe. After their series against the 49ers, WVU will host Canisius on Wednesday, Feb. 28, in their home opener.
In the opening series, Wetherholt had four hits and three walks in 13 at-bats, scoring five runs and stealing three bases.
West Virginia currently sits at 2-2 on the season after splitting the series with Stetson and will look to get their most productive offensive player from a year ago back as soon as possible, while also taking precaution.
