Randy Mazey gives injury update on JJ Wetherholt

After the top of the first inning in West Virginia’s last game against Stetson, star shortstop JJ Wetherholt exited the game with an apparent hamstring injury.

On Wednesday, WVU baseball head coach Randy Mazey gave an update on Wetherholt’s status.

“Too early to tell. Had some tests done yesterday and we’re waiting on the results. We’re taking it day by day,” Mazey said.

Before exiting game two of the doubleheader Monday, Wetherholt walked and scored a run.

Wetherholt also dealt with a hamstring injury this past summer.

“I don’t know if I’m allowed to comment on that, so just for safety I better not,” Mazey said when asked if Wetherholt’s recent injury was the same hamstring he injured in the summer.

In the opening series, Wetherholt started all four games, got four hits and walked three times, including one intentional in 13 at-bats, with three stolen bases all coming in the opener.

Wetherholt was named to many preseason awards and watchlists, while also being projected to be the number-one pick in the 2024 MLB Draft by many.

Blue Gold Sports will keep you updated on Wetherholt’s injury and status as more information becomes available.
