West Virginia men’s basketball was blown out on Saturday in Texas and now they face TCU on the road on Monday night.
The Mountaineers have lost four of their last five, and their struggles on the road are no secret.
“Like I told our guys, do me a favor, this is on me, I didn’t have you guys ready to play. One way or another I didn’t have you guys ready to play,” West Virginia interim head coach Josh Eilert said after WVU’s loss to Texas on Saturday. “But we have a quick turnaround, and we go play a really good TCU team in Fort Worth on Monday. If you start hanging your head and you can’t understand how to flush it and learn from your mistakes, on a quick turn like that, one loss can turn into two real quick.”
Part of the issue for the Mountaineers has been their ability to just make shots.
WVU shot 38 percent from the field, while they went 3 for 13 from beyond the arc. In comparison, Texas had more three-pointers made (15) than West Virginia had three-pointers attempted.
TCU comes into Monday night’s game having lost their last two games, including a road loss to Iowa State over the weekend. The Horned Frogs are 5-5 in Big 12 play, and are one of nine Big 12 teams ranging from 4-6 wins in conference play. The Horned Frogs have five scorers who average at least 9.8 points per game this season.
Emmanuel Miller leads that group with 16.5 points per game, and he scored 13 points and four points against WVU in these two teams’ two meetings last season.
The Horned Frogs are 36th in KenPom’s rankings, and are 41st in the NET Rankings. All-time, WVU leads the series 18-5, and the Mountaineers are 6-5 on the road against the Horned Frogs.
This season, WVU is 0-9 in games away from the WVU Coliseum, including 0-5 in true road games. TCU is a 12.5-point favorite, while KenPom gives WVU just a 10 percent chance of winning the game.
Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. EST from Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. The game will be televised on ESPN+.
