A busy Saturday went well for the Mountaineers, who won back-to-back matches to improve to 7-1 this weekend.
In home matches against Cleveland State and Radford, WVU won 5-2 and 4-1 respectively. The second match was stopped early, shortly after WVU led Radford 4-0.
Against the Cleveland State Vikings, West Virginia picked up the doubles point after senior Momoko Nagato and junior Michaela Kucharova broke the 1-1 tie with a 6-4 victory over Sima Heren and Bethany Yauch.
Upon switching to singles play, though, Heren did not let her doubles less go unanswered, as she was the first to finish her singles match. As Cleveland State’s second seed, Heren defeated freshman Maya Bordereau, 6-3, 6-4.
With the team match tied at one win, Nagato and redshirt sophomore Maja Dodik finished next, securing two more WVU victories. One seeded Love-Star Alexis fell to the Vikings’ Oihane Vicaro in a 7-5, 7-5 rout, but it was all WVU afterward.
Kucharova dominated on court six, 6-1, 6-1 and graduate student Ting-Pei Chang finished the job with a 6-2, 7-5 victory. The Mountaineers defeated Cleveland State 5-2.
With that momentum in place, the Mountaineers next welcomed Radford with a thrilling doubles competition. The first two matches went in favor of WVU, as teams of Dodik and Bordereau along with Alexis and Chang each won 6-1.
With the two wins Saturday, WVU’s youngest doubles pairing of Dodik and Bordereau remain undefeated together. Nagato and Kucharova led 4-2 when their match was stopped.
Dodik, Nagato, and Bordereau finished their respective singles matches in that order to secure a team victory for West Virginia.
The top ranked players from each team, graduate student Love-Star Alexis for WVU and junior Julia Abrams for the Highlanders, finished their match before play stopped entirely. Abrams came out victorious, 6-4, 6-4.
Now 7-1, the Mountaineers will continue their stay at home for three more weekends. They welcome Toledo on Friday at 5 p.m. and play William & Mary the following Sunday at 11 a.m.
