WVU gets blitzed early and have no answer as they get blown out in loss to Texas

After dropping their first matchup in Morgantown, the Texas men’s basketball team put on an offensive showcase defeating West Virginia 94-58 on Saturday

The Mountaineers were unable to keep up with the Longhorns’ fast style of play as Texas shot 51.2% from the field and 46.9% from three on 15 more shot attempts.

WVU also struggled offensively, shooting just 38.2% from the field and 23.1% from three.

Dylan Disu led Texas with 27 points after a huge first half where he shot a perfect seven of seven. He had 18 points in their first meeting before fouling out.

Jesse Edwards was the Mountaineers leading scorer with 17 points after not playing in the first matchup between the two teams.

Five Longhorns ended in double-figures as Texas was very efficient offensively, moving the ball well with 28 assists compared to just six for West Virginia.

Max Abmas continued his success against the Mountaineers with 19 points, shooting five of 12 from three after scoring 32 points against WVU on Jan. 13.

West Virginia out-rebounded Texas 37-36, but was unable to crawl back from a large halftime deficit.

It was a back-and-forth game in the very beginning with both teams tied at seven in the first two minutes of the contest.

Then, Texas would pull ahead early up 18-7 by the first media timeout after making an 11-0 run. Disu had 11 of those 18 points shooting four-for-four from the field including three-for-three from three.

West Virginia continued to struggle by the U12 media timeout, Texas was on a 20-4 run with the score being 27-11 with 10:55 left in the first half.

The Mountaineers were being outrebounded 10-5 and committed five turnovers in the first 9:05 in the contest.

Disu kept the hot hand, not missing a single shot with under eight minutes left in the first, shooting seven-of-seven from the field and five-of-five from three.

West Virginia had clear struggles containing Texas in the first half. The Longhorns were playing some of their best basketball, shooting 23 of 35 (65.7%) from the field and eight of 16 from three before heading into the locker room.

Offensively, the Mountaineers couldn’t create the right opportunities. In the first, they shot 12 of 24 from the field and just one of two from three.

WVU committed 10 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, allowing Texas to capitalize with 10 points of those turnovers.

To begin the second half, Disu stayed perfect making his eighth field goal and sixth three.

Then, Texas would struggle to make a field goal going 0-9 including three-straight misses from Disu, with under 17 minutes left in the game.

The Mountaineers struggled coming out of the locker room too however, shooting just four of 12 in the first seven minutes of the second half.

The Longhorns stayed in control for the remainder of the second half and added to their large lead.

WVU football player Aden Tagloa-Nelson saw five minutes of game-action after being added to the men’s basketball roster mid-season.

In the end, the Longhorns out-played the Mountaineers in almost every aspect scoring 45 points via the three and scoring 29 points off of 15 West Virginia turnovers.

The Longhorns had eight steals and six blocks and scored 17 fast-break points.
