Following a 76-69 win against BYU last Saturday, West Virginia women’s basketball head coach Mark Kellogg spoke on the impressive start for the Mountaineers and the overall picture leading up the Big 12 Conference tournament.
“We got a good thing going right now. We want to live in the moment and hope we can build off of the start we have,” Kellogg said.
The Mountaineers, who are currently 19-2, are on a six-game winning streak with only eight games left to play in the regular season.
With key players like Kyah Watson and Lauren Fields, the Mountaineers have yielded sizeable margins against opposing teams offensively, including shooting and assists, displaying good ball-movement.
Watson, a transfer student from South Dakota, has scored 226 points for the team, averaging 7.3 points per game.
“Kyah (Watson) covers up so many parts of the court for us. She seems to be everywhere for her teammates,” Kellogg said about the redshirt junior’s impact.
Kellogg’s team has also had large success in home games, averaging their best stats in Morgantown, averaging 73 ppg and holding opponents to just 56.6 ppg at home in Big 12 play alone.
“We have a great atmosphere in the Coliseum and feed of of the energy given to us by the fans. We can only hope they continue to come watch and just make this state more proud of our team,” Kellogg explained.
With the conference tournament is five-weeks away as well as upcoming games against ranked opponents in No. 18 Baylor, No. 24 Oklahoma and No. 8 Kansas State, Kellogg and West Virginia will hope to continue their success throughout the remainder of the regular season.
The Mountaineers will host Texas Tech on Tuesday, with tipoff at 7 p.m. EST and the game being streamed on ESPN+.
