Baseball America names Wetherholt to Preseason All-America First Team

Star WVU second baseman JJ Wetherholt continues to gain preseason attention this winter, as he is now a member of Baseball America’s Preseason All-America College First Team.

Wetherholt consistently ranks in the top tier of prospects on 2024 MLB mock drafts. He is eyed primarily as a shortstop with a secondary position of second base. In 2023, Wetherholt recorded a batting average of .449 and hit 16 home runs.

Joining the junior on the First Team is Wake Forest first baseman Nick Kurtz, who jumps back-and-forth with Wetherholt for the top spot on most mock drafts. Kurtz was one of two players to be unanimously selected to the First Team, with the second being Florida pitcher and first baseman Jac Caglianone at the utility spot.

JJ Wetherholt and the West Virginia Mountaineers kick off their 2024 baseball season on Feb. 16 against Stetson in DeLand, Fla.
