MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Jan. 26, 2024) –The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team hits the road on Saturday to Annapolis, Maryland, taking on No. 13 Navy on Saturday at Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.
Saturday’s contest against the Midshipmen will be shot in two relays throughout the day. The first relay will begin at 9 a.m. ET. A live scorecard for the matches can be found at ncaarifle.org. Additionally, live targets for the match will be available online, courtesy of MegaLink.
West Virginia (10-0, 4-0 GARC) is 32-8 all-time against Navy (4-8, 0-4 GARC), with the series beginning in 1966. The meeting is the first this season between the two programs. WVU claimed last season’s meeting 4742-4709 in Morgantown.
Last time out, the Mountaineers defeated No. 16 Army 4739-4693. The Mountaineer packed the top of the leaderboard, with six individuals occupying the top six spots. Freshman Griffin Lake won the overall with an 1185 (589 SB – 596 AR) and his mark in air rifle was also the highest. Fifth-year senior Malori Brown and senior Matt Sanchez tied for the best finish in smallbore with equal marks of 592.
The winning effort by West Virginia marked the 10th straight ranked team the Mountaineers have defeated to open the season. Six Mountaineers packed the leaderboard, with six occupying the top 10 spots in the overall standings.
WVU holds the top aggregate (4742.2) and smallbore (2361.8) average in the nation. West Virginia’s average of 2380.5 in air rifle is third behind TCU and Alaska Fairbanks.
