West Virginia’s JJ Wetherholt has been named the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year for the 2024 season, the conference announced on Wednesday.
This comes as no surprise as Wetherholt won the title last season while holding the best batting average among all Division I players (.449). Wetherholt had 16 home runs as well as stealing 36 bases and finishing with 42 extra-base hits.
Wetherholt is considered one of the best collegiate prospects ahead of this summers MLB Draft. Wetherholt is a native of Mars, Pennsylvania, and he will be one of the big storyline for WVU Baseball this season as well as this being the final season for head coach Randy Mazey.
Wetherholt was also the only Mountaineer selected to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team, and was a unanimous selection to the team as well as for the player of the year award.
